Persons Deprived of Liberty Graduate Through Education Program

Education Empowers Persons Deprived of Liberty

Education has the power to change lives, a lesson embraced by 38 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City. These individuals recently celebrated their graduation from senior high school through the La Salle Green Hills Alternative Education Program.

The graduation ceremony took place within the CIW facility, with the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General delivering the commencement address. During the event, he emphasized how education serves as a key to rehabilitation and personal growth, encouraging the graduates to continue striving to become productive members of society.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing New Opportunities

The Director General shared the inspiring journey of a former PDL turned senator, highlighting that transformation is possible with determination. He acknowledged that some employers may hesitate to hire PDLs but assured that these individuals are eager to prove their loyalty and worth in the workforce. “In employing PDLs, they can be assured of loyalty, as these individuals often have a different perspective on opportunity,” he said.

Justice Undersecretary Deo Marco, who also attended the ceremony, motivated the graduates not to let their past define their future. “You are not defined by your past. It may explain where you’ve been, but it will not dictate where you’re going. Your diploma unlocks new opportunities and a new life waiting for you,” he remarked.

Program Partnership Ensures Educational Continuity

In April 2024, the CIW partnered with La Salle Green Hills through a memorandum of agreement to offer an alternative learning system specifically designed for PDLs. This program guarantees that students who enroll can complete the full two years of senior high school, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for reintegration into society.

The graduation of these 38 PDLs underscores the vital role that education plays in transforming lives behind bars. It also highlights the importance of support systems that create pathways for learning and growth, even in challenging circumstances.
