The Philippines and the United States wrapped up trade talks on a high note, despite the looming shadow of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on Philippine goods. The mood? Constructive and positive.
At the heart of the discussions was one clear priority: protecting and promoting the welfare of local industries. Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs, Secretary Frederick Go, who led the Philippine delegation, emphasized this focus. “We made sure to put the welfare of Philippine local industries at the center of our negotiations,” he stated. Go expressed optimism that the talks would pave the way for a stronger, more resilient trade relationship between Manila and Washington.
The goal? A partnership that benefits both countries while fueling growth in homegrown industries. “We hope these discussions mark the beginning of a process toward arrangements that not only strengthen US-Philippines ties but also help diversify our export markets,” Go added.
Trade and Industry Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque shared the same hopeful outlook, highlighting how clearly the Philippine side communicated their industries’ concerns and demands to the US Trade Representative (USTR). Meanwhile, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez took to social media to underline the meeting’s forward momentum, describing it as a step toward a “mutually beneficial PH-US economic partnership.” He also reiterated a crucial message: “The Philippines is open for business.”
This intense dialogue stemmed from US President Donald Trump’s 17-percent reciprocal tariff on Philippine exports—one of the lowest rates in Southeast Asia but still a source of worry for exporters. Although these tariffs are currently suspended, except for China, until July 8, the anticipation of their full implementation sends ripples across various sectors in the Philippines.
The Philippine delegation—comprising Go, Roque, and Romualdez—met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington. They laid out how the tariffs could unlock both opportunities and challenges for Philippine export products, setting the stage for future negotiations aimed at fair and fruitful trade ties.
The road ahead is certainly not without hurdles, but the spirit of cooperation and mutual benefit shines bright in this renewed dialogue between the two nations. Will these talks herald a new chapter for PH-US trade relations? Time will tell.
