Philippine Air Force Moves Major Danilo Atienza Air Base

PAF Transfers Major Danilo Atienza Air Base

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has transferred the Major Danilo Atienza Air Base from Sangley Point in Cavite to Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City. This move is part of a broader strategic basing plan aimed at improving defense capabilities across the archipelago.

According to sources familiar with the matter, several key units including the 18th Attack Squadron, 20th Attack Squadron, and the 462nd Rotary Wing Field Maintenance Squadron of the 15th Strike Wing have been relocated. The shift strengthens the Air Force’s presence in northern Mindanao, a crucial area for national security.

Strategic Importance of the Relocation

Lumbia Airport, now serving as the new home for the Major Danilo Atienza Air Base, was previously the site of the Tactical Operations Group-10. This Air Force unit is primarily responsible for maintaining security in northern Mindanao. Moving the 15th Strike Wing’s assets there enhances the PAF’s operational reach.

Military analysts explain that this transfer is a strategic move to better implement the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC). One defense official noted, “If you would note, it’s the 15th Strike Wing that will be transferring into the area. So much of the capabilities of the 15th Strike wing will be needed more on the north or southern part of the area, covering the 360-degree of the entire archipelago.”

Decongesting Sangley Point for Naval Expansion

Aside from strategic positioning, the relocation also aims to ease congestion at Sangley Point. This area currently hosts numerous Philippine Navy personnel and assets. By moving Air Force units, the Navy will have more space to grow and improve its facilities.

An Air Force spokesperson shared, “We have the Navy there [Sangley Point] so it’s better if we have our own area, especially if we need more expansion. We will have better facilities.” This separation is expected to streamline operations for both branches and support future development.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Archipelagic Defense

The repositioning of the Major Danilo Atienza Air Base is a clear step toward enhancing the Philippines’ defense posture. It allows the Air Force to maximize its capabilities while supporting the Navy’s expansion needs. Furthermore, the move aligns with the government’s commitment to safeguarding the entire 360-degree perimeter of the archipelago.

Local experts believe this relocation will improve response times and operational efficiency in key regions. As the PAF continues to adapt to evolving security challenges, such strategic basing will prove vital in maintaining national sovereignty.
