Philippine Army Suspends Reception Rites Amid Review
The Philippine Army has halted reception rites for soldiers assigned to various units following the recent death of a soldier in Maguindanao del Sur. This decision came from the Army chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, who ordered a review to determine if these traditional ceremonies are still necessary within the military. According to Col. Louie Dema-ala, the Army spokesperson, the suspension aims to examine whether reception rites should continue as part of unit traditions.
“He (Nafarrete) instructed the stopping of reception ceremonies within the Philippine Army, particularly the reception conducted for those who are already soldiers,” Dema-ala told reporters in Filipino during a phone interview.
Reception Rites Suspension and Exceptions
The suspension specifically affects reception ceremonies for soldiers who have already been enlisted and assigned to units. However, this directive does not apply to the welcoming rituals for civilians entering formal military training programs.
“The reception when [civilians] will just begin training, that will continue because those happen in schools. But the [reception rites] conducted by units when receiving new soldiers, he (Nafarrete) ordered its halt,” Dema-ala explained.
Tradition Versus Safety in Reception Rites
Reception rites have long been a customary way to welcome new soldiers into the military community. The 6th Infantry Division emphasized that while such traditions hold value, they must always follow existing military policies and regulations to ensure safety.
This suspension follows the tragic death of Pvt. Charlie Patigayon, 22, who collapsed during a reception rite inside the 6th Infantry Battalion headquarters on July 30. Initial reports indicated he died from kidney failure.
Ongoing Investigation and Accountability
In connection with the incident, two officers and 21 personnel are currently under restrictive custody and isolated at the 6th Infantry Division headquarters. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Pvt. Patigayon’s death while reviewing the procedures of reception rites across the Army.
The Philippine Army’s move to suspend these rites shows a growing concern for the welfare of its soldiers and a reassessment of long-standing traditions in light of recent events.
