Philippine Coast Guard Intensifies Search Using Advanced Equipment

PCG Deploys Advanced Equipment for Search Operations

Starting Monday, July 14, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will intensify its efforts using advanced underwater equipment to locate the remains of the missing sabungeros in Taal Lake, Batangas. The search for the missing cockfight aficionados has gained momentum as authorities employ new technology to navigate the challenging conditions of the lake.

PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab shared in an interview that a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) will be deployed beneath the lake’s surface. “We expect it to arrive at our staging area by 9 a.m., and we can start utilizing our ROV,” she said. This tool will enhance the search, especially since murky and muddy waters have made visibility difficult.

Capabilities of the Remotely Operated Vehicle

The ROV can operate at depths of up to 1,000 feet and can lift objects weighing between 10 to 12 kilograms using its clamp. “When the ROV identifies an object that could serve as evidence, it can retrieve it,” Cayabyab explained. Operators will monitor the ROV closely, ready to raise any found items to the surface upon receiving the signal.

Beyond recovering potential evidence, the ROV will also safeguard the PCG’s technical divers, given Taal Lake’s vast and deep environment. Despite the introduction of this technology, diving operations will continue as usual until any suspicious materials or items are found.

Currently, over 40 PCG personnel are involved in diving operations, which typically commence before 8 a.m., weather permitting. “We are at full force, ensuring our divers have proper relief and sectioning during their dives,” Cayabyab added.

Complementary Technology and Ongoing Efforts

In addition to the ROV, the PCG is using an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) to conduct aerial surveys of Taal Lake. “This complements our underwater search and the efforts of our technical divers,” the spokesperson said.

Since the operation began on Thursday, authorities have recovered five sacks from the lake. These sacks have been handed over to forensic experts for investigation. The search intensified after a whistleblower claimed that the bodies of 34 missing sabungeros were disposed of in the lake.

Authorities remain committed to uncovering any evidence that could shed light on this tragic case. They continue to adapt their methods and use technology to overcome challenges posed by environmental conditions.
