Philippine Coast Guard Joins Trilateral Maritime Exercise
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is set to join a trilateral maritime exercise with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Japan Coast Guard (JCG) in Kagoshima, Japan. A total of 123 PCG personnel will take part in this important event scheduled from June 16 to 20. This marks the second time the PCG will participate in such a joint exercise, aiming to boost cooperation and strengthen maritime security in the region.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan led the send-off ceremony for the crew of BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Manila on June 6. The vessel will arrive in Kagoshima on June 12, coinciding with Philippine Independence Day. Before the exercise, the ship will undergo a three-day maintenance and repair period.
Strengthening Maritime Cooperation and Diplomacy
According to officials, the trilateral maritime exercise promotes stronger collaboration and deeper diplomatic relations among the coast guards of the Philippines, the United States, and Japan. It also opens doors for further maritime cooperation based on rules and shared responsibilities.
A key part of the drill is a search and rescue exercise (SAREX) in the waters near Kinko Bay. This activity will test the teams’ ability to respond to simulated emergencies such as rescuing passengers from a capsized vessel and managing maritime accidents. The exercise will enhance coordination and interoperability among the participating agencies.
Comprehensive Training Activities
Besides SAREX, the exercise will feature communication drills, maneuvering exercises, photo sessions, maritime law enforcement training, and passing drills. These activities aim to improve the skills and readiness of all participating personnel.
The PCG acknowledges the valuable role that the USCG and JCG have played in enhancing its capabilities through various human resource development programs. This ongoing partnership reflects a shared commitment to regional maritime security and safety.
Historical Context and Future Directions
This exercise is the second trilateral event between the PCG, USCG, and JCG. The first was held in Mariveles, Bataan in June 2023. This year’s event is the first time it will take place on Japanese soil.
The PCG’s involvement aligns with directives from President Marcos Jr. to deepen collaboration with US and Japanese coast guards. Through joint exercises and shared initiatives, the agencies aim to promote a rules-based maritime order and regional stability.
