Philippine Coast Guard Rescues Fishermen Off Zambales Coast
SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — The Philippine Coast Guard swiftly rescued eight fishermen from a distressed fishing vessel off the coast of Zambales after the boat suffered engine trouble. The Philippine Coast Guard’s prompt response highlights their commitment to maritime safety and the security of Filipino fishermen.
On Sunday, July 13, at 12:10 p.m., the PCG vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua received a distress call from the fishing boat F/B Grey Erron. The vessel reported a clutch disk transmission failure, leaving it stranded about 70 nautical miles west of Botolan, Zambales. The fishing boat carried eight crew members, including one individual suffering from severe leg swelling caused by arthritis.
Swift Rescue and Medical Assistance
The PCG vessel immediately sailed approximately 89 nautical miles toward the last known location of the distressed boat, arriving around 7 p.m. that day. During the night and continuing into the next morning, the crew deployed a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to provide direct support.
The rescue team delivered drinking water and administered medical care to the crew member with swollen legs. He, along with two other fishermen, was safely evacuated for further medical evaluation. The PCG’s engineering team also diagnosed and recharged the fishing vessel’s main engine battery, which had gone completely inoperable.
Continued Support and Commitment to Safety
By Tuesday, a service boat arrived to transfer the rescued fishermen, including the patient, back to their home vessel. Local authorities noted that this incident underscores the Philippine Coast Guard’s unwavering dedication to protecting Filipino fishermen operating in the West Philippine Sea.
One of the rescuers emphasized, “This operation reflects our steadfast commitment to ensure the safety and security of our maritime community.” The PCG continues to prioritize rapid response and comprehensive assistance for those in distress at sea.
