Philippine Coast Guard Acts Quickly After Vessel Collision
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard responded promptly to a collision involving two vessels near the Port of Lucena in Barangay Talao-Talao on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. as MV Peñafrancia VI, heading to Balanacan Port in Marinduque, collided head-on with the fishing boat FV Sr. Fernando II, which was returning from Tayabas Bay.
This collision happened while the two vessels navigated the Lucena breakwater, with one vessel exiting and the other entering the harbor. Thankfully, the Philippine Coast Guard managed the situation efficiently, assisting in offloading passengers and cargo from the damaged boats.
All Passengers and Crew Safe After Collision
After the collision, passengers and cargo were transferred to MV Peñafrancia IX. Medical checks were conducted, and the vessel resumed its journey to Marinduque at 12:25 p.m. A total of 82 passengers and 18 crew members aboard MV Peñafrancia VI, operated by a local shipping company, were confirmed unharmed and in good condition.
Likewise, the fishing boat’s 16 crew members, including its captain, escaped injury. The fishing vessel, operated by a regional sea fishing company, sustained damage to its forward bow but was safely moored at the Lucena PFDA Fishing Port. Meanwhile, MV Peñafrancia VI suffered damage to its starboard bow and ramp.
Damage Assessment and Investigation Underway
Authorities confirmed there was no oil spill or damage below the waterline on either vessel, and both were deemed seaworthy. Statements from the crew members were collected to help clarify the circumstances surrounding the accident. Vessel owners have agreed to resolve the matter amicably, according to local sources.
