Six Lighthouses Restored in Remarkable Five Days
After years of neglect, the six lighthouses in Romblon province have been fully restored by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). This rapid restoration showcases the PCG’s commitment to maritime safety and navigational support.
The Philippine Coast Guard’s field maintenance and inspection center completed the restoration of these six lighthouses in only five days, according to statements released by the Maritime Safety Services Unit (MSSU) over the weekend. This swift action has significantly improved the operational status of vital coastal navigational aids.
Nonfunctional Lighthouses Revived to Enhance Maritime Safety
Before the repair, several lighthouses had been dormant for years. The Calatong Hills light station was nonfunctional for three years, while the Corcuera and Malbog light stations were inactive for two years. Additionally, the Gorda, Calabogo Point, and Romblon Jetty light stations had been out of service for one year.
“With this successful operation, the operational efficiency of light stations in Southern Tagalog has now increased to 94.06 percent,” the MSSU reported. This improvement is crucial for ensuring the safety of vessels navigating the region’s waters.
The Vital Role of Lighthouses in Maritime Navigation
Lighthouses serve as essential navigational aids, guiding vessels safely and enhancing maritime domain awareness. Their restoration not only supports local fishermen and commercial shipping but also strengthens efforts to monitor maritime activities and prevent accidents.
Local leaders and maritime authorities praised the PCG’s dedication, noting that the restored lighthouses will contribute to safer seas and better maritime management in Romblon and surrounding areas.
