Philippine Coast Guard Scholar Excels at US Academy
A Philippine Coast Guard scholar recently graduated with flying colors from the United States Coast Guard Academy. Probationary Ensign John Rex Adong Gaviola completed his studies with magna cum laude honors, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering as part of the USCGA Class of 2025. His achievement highlights the success of the international scholarship program that supports Filipino coast guard officers.
Gaviola was among 263 graduates who marched during the USCGA’s 144th commencement exercises held last May 21 in New London, Connecticut. The event was attended by prominent officials, including the US Department of Homeland Security Secretary and the US Coast Guard Commandant. Accompanying Gaviola and his family was the acting commander of the PCG’s Education, Training and Doctrine Command, demonstrating the strong support from the Philippine Coast Guard.
From Cavite to Connecticut
Coming from Cavite, Gaviola has been a PCG scholar since 2021 under the International Cadetship Program. He previously graduated with honors from the Philippine Science High School Main Campus. Selected from a competitive group of 111 applicants, he represents the dedication and talent nurtured by the PCG’s scholarship initiatives.
Upon returning to the Philippines, Gaviola will be commissioned as an Ensign in the Coast Guard. He is committed to serving at least eight years of continuous active duty, applying the knowledge and skills he gained abroad to strengthen the PCG’s capabilities.
Support for Career Development in the Coast Guard
Local experts note that this accomplishment aligns with the broader goals of career development and capacity-building for Filipino coast guardsmen. The PCG emphasizes the importance of training and education in producing competent public servants dedicated to the nation’s safety and security. Furthermore, government leadership continues to back these efforts, ensuring that coast guardian programs receive the necessary support to thrive.
The PCG extends its congratulations to Gaviola, expressing confidence in his future as an outstanding officer. His success story serves as inspiration for other Filipino scholars aiming to excel in international institutions and contribute to the country’s maritime security.
