Philippine Coast Guard Seizes ₱74.8M Illegal Drugs at Matnog Port

Major Drug Bust at Matnog Port

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully seized an estimated ₱74.8 million worth of suspected illegal drugs during a recent operation at the Matnog Port in Sorsogon. This significant seizure highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking through maritime channels.

Authorities recovered 11 kilograms of suspected illegal drugs alongside drug paraphernalia. The operation was carried out in close coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and other law enforcement units at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) facility in Barangay Caloocan, Matnog town.

Suspects Apprehended in Coordinated Effort

Officials reported that two suspects were arrested during the operation. A 19-year-old man from Pualas, Lanao del Sur, and a 34-year-old individual from San Miguel, Manila, are now facing charges for violating Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Local authorities emphasized that the arrests were a result of timely intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement actions among agencies involved.

Intelligence and K9 Teams Lead the Inspection

Information from PDEA personnel in Matnog indicated that a vehicle was suspected of transporting illegal drugs through the port. Consequently, the PCG deployed a K9 team, supported by the Coast Guard Intelligence Group Bicol and the Coast Guard Intelligence Unit Matnog, to inspect the vehicle.

Two narcotic detection dogs alerted officers to a white Toyota Hilux bearing plate number NGR 9539. Upon inspection, authorities discovered the contraband hidden inside the vehicle.

Strengthening Maritime Security Through Cooperation

The Coast Guard District Bicol underscored the critical role of inter-agency collaboration in intercepting drug trafficking activities along maritime routes. This operation reinforces the PCG’s mandate to protect coastal communities and maintain the security of maritime borders.

Community members and local leaders noted that such coordinated efforts are vital in the fight against illegal drugs and in ensuring safer ports and waterways for all Filipinos.
