First Lady Condemns Philippine Film Heritage Building
First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos has voiced strong criticism over the Philippine Film Heritage Building, calling it a “rotten monument of incompetence.” The P200 million project, meant to honor Filipino filmmakers, writers, and artists, instead reveals glaring construction flaws, she said.
“Instead, what did we get? Leaking roofs, cracked walls, unfinished theaters, ceilings already stained with water—all in a building that hasn’t even opened,” Araneta-Marcos lamented in a social media post on Friday. “Seriously?! Have some shame! Even this, you’ve robbed of dignity.”
Project Meant to Celebrate Filipino Artists
The Philippine Film Heritage Building was envisioned as a tribute to the country’s rich creative community. However, community members and officials reported that the structure remains unfinished and riddled with defects.
“Our artists deserve respect—not this rotten monument of incompetence,” the First Lady emphasized, expressing disappointment that the building meant to uplift Filipino artistry instead stands as a symbol of neglect.
Inspection Reveals Serious Construction Flaws
On Thursday, Araneta-Marcos invited members of the press to witness firsthand the substandard work. The building, scheduled for completion that day, displayed multiple issues including water damage and structural cracks.
According to the Department of Public Works and Highways-South Manila District Engineering Office, the contract for the project was awarded to Great Pacific Builders and General Contractor, Inc.
Contractors Under Fire for Multiple Issues
Local leaders have noted that the Discaya-owned company responsible for the construction has faced scrutiny over other government projects, including multi-million-peso flood-control initiatives.
Moreover, the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board has revoked the licenses of nine firms linked to businesswoman and former Pasig City mayoral candidate Cezarah “Sarah” Discaya, escalating concerns about the quality and integrity of government contracts awarded to these entities.
Awaiting Official Responses
Requests for comments from the Discaya family and Great Pacific Builders and General Contractor, Inc. have yet to receive any response, officials reported.
The Philippine Film Heritage Building’s condition has sparked calls for accountability and better oversight to protect public funds and honor Filipino cultural heritage properly.
