Philippine Flag Raised Over Philippine Rise to Assert Sovereignty

CAMP AQUINO, Tarlac City – On Sunday, May 18, the Armed Forces Northern Luzon Command proudly raised the Philippine flag over the Philippine Rise, reinforcing the country’s sovereign rights over this vital undersea territory in the Philippine Sea. This event highlighted the importance of the Philippine Rise as a national symbol and maritime domain.

The ceremony took place aboard the BRP Emilio Jacinto (PS35), operated by the Northern Luzon Naval Command under Nolcom’s leadership. Adding to the significance, two FA-50 fighter jets from the Philippine Air Force’s 5th Fighter Wing flew overhead, showcasing strong air and sea cooperation in defending the nation’s maritime interests.

Significance of the Philippine Rise

The flag-raising marked the eighth anniversary of officially renaming Benham Rise to Philippine Rise. This rename was declared through Executive Order No. 25 on May 16, 2017, establishing the undersea feature as Talampas ng Pilipinas. Covering more than 13 million hectares of seabed east of Luzon, the area is recognized under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as part of the country’s extended continental shelf.

As Lt. Gen. Fernyl G. Buca, Nolcom commander, expressed, “The Philippine Rise is not just part of our territory. It is part of our identity.” He emphasized that raising the flag in these waters sends a clear message that the Philippines is present and committed to protecting what rightfully belongs to its people.

Unified Approach to Maritime Security

The voyage to Philippine Rise began on Friday, May 16, with the formal send-off of the BRP Emilio Jacinto from Soiltech Pier in San Fernando City, La Union. Senior military officials and maritime stakeholders attended, representing a united front in safeguarding the country’s maritime domains.

Northern Luzon Command continues to carry out maritime patrols, surveillance, and interagency coordination to deter illegal activities and secure strategic waters surrounding Northern and Eastern Luzon. This ongoing commitment ensures the protection and preservation of the Philippine Rise as a critical part of the nation’s maritime territory.
