Philippine Government Prepares Early Repatriation Plan for OFWs
The Philippine government must be ready for the early repatriation of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) amid rising tensions in the Middle East. As Israel and Iran continue exchanging airstrikes, officials emphasize the need to swiftly bring home Filipinos residing in these conflict zones.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian stressed, “The government must stand ready to swiftly and safely repatriate our OFWs in Iran and Israel should the armed conflict escalate.” He also urged that Filipino workers in Iraq be included in these emergency plans, considering the country’s complex security situation.
OFWs in Iraq Face Heightened Risks
Iraq hosts Iran-backed militias, which may draw the nation deeper into regional conflicts. This reality raises concerns for the safety of Filipinos living there. “OFWs in Iraq must also be included in contingency efforts, especially as the country hosts Iran-backed militias and could be drawn into regional tensions,” the senator pointed out.
In addition to evacuation plans, Gatchalian called for immediate and comprehensive support for OFWs in these areas. This includes livelihood assistance and access to health services, particularly mental health care, to help them cope with the crisis.
He underscored the government’s responsibility, saying, “Siguruhin nating ligtas ang bawat Pilipino sa Iran, Israel, at Iraq,” which means, “Let’s make sure that each Filipino in Iran, Israel, and Iraq are safe.” The lawmaker further asserted, “Tungkulin ng gobyerno na pangalagaan ang kanilang seguridad at proteksyon,” meaning, “The government has the right to ensure their security and protection.”
Government Readiness and Embassy Actions
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has also weighed in on the situation. Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega confirmed that while the Philippines is not sending new workers to Iran, it remains vigilant about the welfare of Filipinos living there. According to sources, approximately 4,000 Filipinos reside in Iran and Iraq combined.
De Vega mentioned that the Philippine embassy in Iraq has issued advisories to Filipino residents amid concerns that Iraq could become a target in the ongoing conflict. Despite the threats, embassies in Iraq, Iran, and Israel are prepared to provide shelter and assistance to Filipinos affected by the violence.
These proactive steps highlight the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad during uncertain times. Early repatriation plans, support services, and embassy readiness form the backbone of this effort.
