Philippine Government Raises Alarm Over China Long March 12
The Philippine government has expressed serious concern about debris from China’s Long March 12 rocket falling into Philippine archipelagic waters. Officials urged spacefaring nations to act responsibly and respect the rights of other countries in their space activities.
“The Philippines notes with concern China’s launch of its Long March 12 space launch vehicle on August 4, 2025, which resulted in debris falling into Philippine archipelagic waters,” a statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.
In response to the incident, the government emphasized the need for all countries involved in space exploration to follow established norms for safe and responsible conduct. “The Philippines takes this opportunity to urge all spacefaring states to conduct their space activities in a manner consistent with norms of responsible behavior, and with due regard to the rights and interests of other states,” the statement added.
Calls for Responsible Space Conduct
This event occurred despite previous agreements between President Marcos and Chinese President Xi Jinping. In 2023, both leaders committed to proper notifications and careful management of rocket launches and their aftermath to avoid any negative impact on other nations.
Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs deferred technical and safety concerns to the Philippine Space Agency and other relevant government bodies. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
As of now, China has not issued a public response regarding the debris incident. Local sources noted the importance of transparent communication to prevent future incidents and maintain good relations between the two countries.
