Philippine Military Academy Cadets Embark on Training in India
BAGUIO CITY — Strengthening the ties of defense cooperation, the Philippine Military Academy has sent four cadets to undergo military training at Indian military institutions. This move highlights the growing partnership between the two countries, especially in defense and security.
The Philippine Military Academy cadets are currently enrolled in programs at two renowned Indian military schools. This initiative coincides with recent joint naval exercises between the Philippine Navy and Indian naval forces, conducted just before President Marcos Jr.’s state visit to India.
Cadets Join Indian Naval Academy Programs
Among those training abroad are Third Class Cadets Henry Dumangas and Peter Jim Lagang. They are participating in the Bachelor of Technology–AT-25 program at the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, Kerala. Their course is set to conclude in May 2029, sources said.
These cadets are part of what the Philippine Military Academy terms “Foreign Pre-Commission Training.” Upon completion, they will be commissioned as second lieutenants and ensigns in the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Despite training overseas, they maintain their ties as “mistahs” or classmates with their original PMA batches.
Deepening Defense Cooperation Between Democracies
Officials noted that this historic program advances the shared interests of the Philippines and India, including maritime security, democratic values, and regional stability. It also enhances military education by exposing cadets to world-class training and immersing them in India’s rich cultural heritage.
“This opportunity broadens the global perspective of our cadets and prepares them for future service in the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” a local leader said, highlighting the program’s role in promoting collaboration in maritime security, digital technology, and capacity-building.
Moreover, participation in this bilateral training contributes to the Philippines’ broader security cooperation with India. It fosters interoperability, mutual understanding, and supports a shared vision for a secure, rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
