Philippine Navy Commissions Two New Naval Assets
SUBIC, Zambales — In celebration of its 127th anniversary, the Philippine Navy has officially commissioned two state-of-the-art vessels, the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06) and BRP Albert Majini (PG909). This milestone marks a significant step forward in the Navy’s modernization program.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. attended the ceremony held at the Naval Operating Base in Subic, Zambales. The anniversary theme, “Philippine Navy: Addressing Challenges, Promoting Regional Stability, and Strengthening Maritime Security,” highlights the Navy’s commitment to enhancing national defense capabilities.
Modernizing the Fleet with Advanced Vessels
The BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06) is a guided-missile frigate named after the last Filipino general who surrendered during the Philippine-American War. It arrived from South Korea on April 4, 2025. This vessel is equipped with advanced systems designed for anti-ship, anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, and electronic warfare operations, significantly boosting the Navy’s combat readiness.
BRP Albert Majini: A Homegrown Missile-Capable Patrol Craft
Meanwhile, the BRP Albert Majini (PG909) stands out as the first missile-capable patrol vessel locally assembled in the Philippines. As the eighth ship in the Acero-class Fast Attack Interdiction Craft (FAIC-M) series, it is built for rapid interdiction and coastal security missions.
The vessel honors Ensign Albert Majini, a Medal of Valor recipient recognized for his bravery during anti-piracy operations in Basilan in 1980. This addition enhances the Navy’s ability to respond quickly to maritime threats.
Strengthening Maritime Security and Regional Stability
These new naval assets strengthen the Philippine Navy’s capacity to tackle current and emerging challenges in the maritime domain. Local experts say the commissioning symbolizes a leap forward in securing the country’s waters and supporting regional peace efforts.
By integrating advanced technology and increasing naval firepower, the Navy aims to maintain a robust maritime presence amid evolving security demands. The celebrations underscore ongoing efforts to modernize the fleet and protect the nation’s sovereignty.
