Philippine Navy Strengthens Maritime Sovereignty
During the 127th anniversary of the Philippine Navy, President Marcos underscored the nation’s commitment to protecting its maritime territory. Speaking at the event held in Subic, Zambales, the president declared firmly, “We stand firm. We will never tolerate any act of disrespect against our sovereignty.” This strong statement highlights the government’s dedication to safeguarding the country’s waters and enforcing its rights under international law.
He emphasized, “We will continue to safeguard our maritime zones and exercise our maritime entitlements, in accordance with international law.” The president also stressed, “Wala tayong isusuko, wala tayong papabayaan (We will not surrender anything, we will not neglect anyone),” affirming the nation’s resolve to defend its sovereignty at all costs.
Commitment to Responsible International Engagement
Beyond asserting sovereignty, Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ role as a responsible member of the global community. He highlighted the country’s ongoing diplomatic efforts and participation in international naval exercises such as Balikatan, Sama Sama, Rim of the Pacific, and the Multilateral Naval Exercise Kakadu.
The president also mentioned active staff-level talks with other nations and the hosting of the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting Experts’ Working Group on Maritime Security. “All of these are aligned with our broader efforts to foster cooperation and to maintain peace—both within our borders and across the region,” he said, underscoring the balance between defense and diplomacy.
Enhancing National Defense with New Naval Assets
At the ceremony, President Marcos led the commissioning of two key naval vessels: the newly acquired patrol gunboat BRP Miguel Malvar (PG909) and the guided-missile frigate BRP Albert Majini (FFG06). He described the commissioning as a milestone in modernizing the Philippine Navy.
“What we witnessed during the Commissioning Ceremony of the Navy’s two newly acquired vessels is a Philippine Navy that is modernizing, evolving, and ready to conduct more complex and effective operations to promote the country’s national interest,” the president stated.
This move is part of a broader national defense strategy that invests in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program. Marcos stressed that the focus is not only on acquiring advanced equipment but also on empowering the Navy with the skills, knowledge, and support systems necessary to protect the nation’s interests effectively.
Expanding Strategic Naval Presence
The president also pointed to infrastructure developments such as the groundbreaking at Naval Station Nabasan and initiatives on Chiquita and Grande Islands. Plans to establish a Naval Support Base in Misamis Oriental aim to repurpose Sangley Point for other uses, further strengthening the country’s maritime posture.
“These efforts form part of our strategy to bolster our national defense,” Marcos added, highlighting a multi-faceted approach to securing the Philippines’ maritime frontiers.
Recognizing the Navy’s Vital Role as Guardians
Marcos praised the Philippine Navy’s dedication, especially during the recent 2025 mid-term elections. Over 1,800 personnel were deployed to ensure the polls’ safe and orderly conduct, particularly in areas deemed vulnerable.
He acknowledged the Navy’s readiness to respond to any crisis, whether natural or man-made. “So, despite rough seas, existing dangers, the psychological toll, you serve—not simply out of duty for the Republic, but because that is innately who you are: you are guardians of our people,” Marcos said.
Highlighting their ongoing commitment, the president noted, “In every mission, the Navy proves that maritime strength is measured by the character, clarity of mission, and the commitment of those who serve.” He praised their steadfastness in protecting the West Philippine Sea and other maritime outposts.
“The Navy personnel serve as peacekeepers both on land and at sea—remaining as steadfast as ever in upholding our nation’s maritime entitlements with dignity and with courage,” he concluded.
