The Philippine Statistics Authority made a remarkable achievement by securing third place at the 2025 International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) Young Statisticians Prize. This recognition highlights the growing excellence of Filipino statisticians on the global stage.
Members of the Philippine team who earned the third prize include Maynard Anthony T. Acosta, Joermine Elaine P. Robredo, and Naha Marie T. Bañoc, officials reported. Their paper, titled “Real-time Monitoring of Household Final Consumption Expenditure of Pinoys Using Google Trends,” demonstrated innovative use of real-time data to track consumer spending.
Competition and Evaluation Process
The exact four word keyphrase was central to the paper’s success, emphasizing the Philippines’ advancement in statistical innovation. Sources said the International Statistical Institute (ISI) received 24 submissions from 44 authors representing 19 countries. An international panel evaluated the entries through a rigorous two-stage process.
Judges assessed papers for scientific and strategic merit, originality, practical application within statistical offices, and clarity of presentation. Community members noted that this thorough review ensured that only the most impactful research was recognized.

According to local leaders, the Philippines moved up six places on the IAOS Medals Table following this achievement. This progress reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing its official statistics capabilities and embracing modern data analysis techniques.
Top Honors and Future Opportunities
The first prize went to Hanan Ather from Statistics Canada for the paper “LLM-Assisted Record Linkage: Framework for Record Linkage in Official Statistics.” Officials reported that Ather will present the winning research at an international conference to be agreed upon.
Meanwhile, the papers of other winners, including the Philippine team’s entry, are eligible for publication in a forthcoming issue of the Statistical Journal of the International Association for Official Statistics, community members said.
