Philippines Air Quality Improved in 2024: Significant Gains Reported

Philippines Air Quality Improved in 2024, Officials Report

The Philippines air quality improved significantly in 2024, according to recent reports from environmental authorities. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) highlighted a remarkable decline in harmful air pollutants nationwide, signaling progress in the country’s battle against air pollution.

Specifically, the nationwide average concentration of Particulate Matter 10 (PM10) dropped by 28.2 percent, falling from 39 micrograms per normal cubic meter (µg/ncm) in 2016 to 28 µg/ncm in 2024. Community members noted that this improvement reflects effective policies and stricter environmental regulations.

Understanding Particulate Matter and Its Sources

Particulate matter refers to microscopic solid or liquid particles suspended in the air. These particles typically come from vehicle emissions, fossil fuel combustion, industrial activities, construction, and farming processes. Officials reported that PM10 includes particles 10 micrometers or smaller, while PM2.5 are finer particles measuring 2.5 micrometers or less.

Among these, PM2.5 is particularly dangerous as it can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, posing greater health risks. Local leaders emphasized the importance of monitoring and reducing these pollutants to protect public health.

Metro Manila Shows Notable Air Quality Gains

In Metro Manila, the country’s capital region, air quality showed a notable improvement. PM10 concentrations decreased by 17.4 percent, from 46 µg/ncm in 2016 to 38 µg/ncm in 2024. Moreover, PM2.5 levels dropped by 37.6 percent, from 27 µg/ncm to 16.86 µg/ncm during the same period.

These figures suggest that efforts to clean the air in the capital are yielding positive results, officials reported. These improvements help reduce respiratory issues and other health problems associated with poor air quality.

Major Urban Centers Meet Air Quality Standards

In 2024, 22 out of 34 highly urbanized centers, or 65 percent, met ambient air quality standards for both PM10 and PM2.5. This achievement surpassed the government’s 62 percent target, indicating broader success in improving air quality across the country.

Community members noted that this progress is a sign of growing environmental awareness and stronger implementation of air quality regulations nationwide.

Stricter Vehicle Emission Controls Drive Improvements

From 2022 to 2024, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) intensified efforts to curb vehicular emissions, which remain the top source of air pollution. During this period, the EMB issued 1,807 Certificates of Conformity to vehicles compliant with Euro 4 emission standards.

Euro 4 standards limit nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbon emissions. All new vehicles must meet these standards before entering the market, helping reduce harmful exhaust pollutants that contribute to poor air quality.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Air Quality Gains

While the Philippines air quality improved in 2024, experts stress the need for continued vigilance. Authorities and community groups alike advocate for ongoing monitoring, stricter environmental policies, and public cooperation to maintain and further enhance air quality.

Local leaders encourage citizens to support clean air initiatives and adopt environmentally friendly habits to protect the health of future generations.
