Forecast: Ten to 18 More Cyclones Expected in 2025
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasts that the Philippines will experience ten to 18 more tropical cyclones entering or forming within the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) before the end of 2025. This prediction highlights the country’s heightened vulnerability to extreme weather this year.
At a recent press briefing in Quezon City, Pagasa Deputy Administrator Mar Villanueva shared that the total number of tropical cyclones for 2025 is projected to range from 11 to 19. “We’ve had two already, so we’re expecting about 10 to 18 more tropical cyclones before 2025 ends,” Villanueva said, emphasizing the ongoing need for preparedness.
July’s Tropical Cyclone Outlook
Villanueva further explained that for July alone, one to two additional tropical cyclones are forecast to develop or enter the PAR, apart from Tropical Storm Bising, which is currently under close watch by weather authorities. This forecast aligns with the usual cyclone season activity in the region.
Tropical Storm Bising formed early Friday morning and exited the PAR by afternoon the same day. Its last reported position was approximately 460 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes, outside the PAR boundary. Despite its departure, Bising is expected to intensify the southwest monsoon, locally called habagat, which is bringing rains to western parts of the country, especially Northern Luzon and some areas in Visayas.
Current Cyclone Activity and Effects
Bising marks the second tropical cyclone to affect the Philippines this year, following Tropical Depression Auring in June. Villanueva highlighted that while Bising has left the PAR, it continues to influence weather patterns, particularly by strengthening the habagat rains, which residents and local officials should remain vigilant about.
Local sources noted that the intensified monsoon rains could lead to flooding and landslides, especially in vulnerable areas. Authorities continue to monitor these developments closely and urge communities to stay informed and prepared.
Importance of Preparedness and Monitoring
With the Philippines expecting between ten to 18 more cyclones before the year ends, experts stress the importance of continuous monitoring and readiness. Villanueva advised residents in cyclone-prone regions to heed warnings and updates from official sources to mitigate risks posed by these natural events.
