Philippines Confident in US Defense Amid South China Sea Tensions
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed strong confidence that the Philippines’ long-time ally, the United States, will stand firm to defend the country if it faces security threats. This assurance is particularly significant regarding challenges involving the South China Sea, a critical and contested region in Asia.
However, the president also acknowledged the harsh reality that the Philippines could be drawn into an all-out war with China if the Asian superpower decides to invade Taiwan. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, and any conflict there could have widespread repercussions.
Senate Archives Impeachment Complaint Against Vice President
After hours of intense debate on Wednesday, the Philippine Senate opted to archive the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. This move came following the Supreme Court’s declaration that the complaint was unconstitutional. Senators voted 19-4 with one abstention to archive the articles of impeachment, respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling that cited the House of Representatives’ grave abuse of discretion in handling the impeachment process.
Vice President Duterte’s Legal Team Responds to Senate Decision
In light of the Senate’s decision to archive the impeachment complaint, Vice President Sara Duterte’s legal team announced that their focus will now shift to complying with the Supreme Court’s order. They will prepare a formal comment on the motion seeking to overturn the ruling that declared the impeachment complaint unconstitutional.
“The defense team acknowledges the Senate’s decision to adhere to the Supreme Court ruling and archive the articles of impeachment,” said Michael Poa, the impeachment spokesperson and one of Duterte’s defense lawyers.
These developments highlight the complex political and security landscape that the Philippines continues to navigate, balancing its alliances and internal governance challenges.
