Remembering the Philippines’ Contributions to Upholding International Law
On Independence Day, the nation was reminded of the Philippines’ contributions to upholding international law. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) called on all Filipinos to recognize the country’s vital role in promoting a rules-based global order.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo highlighted the nation’s unique history as the earliest modern democracy in Asia. He urged citizens to “honor our heritage while looking to the future.” Manalo emphasized that the Philippines’ commitment to democracy, universal human rights, freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination remains a proud legacy.
Honoring Our Heritage and Struggles
“As we reflect on our journey to nationhood, we must remember our distinct place in history as Asia’s first modern democracy,” Manalo stated. He called on Filipinos to take pride in the country’s contributions to international law while pursuing a path toward greatness.
The DFA chief also reminded the public of the sacrifices made by Filipino forebears who fought bravely to free the nation from foreign oppression. “Our great forebears have fought with their lives in the hopes that our nation would thrive and prosper on its own, free from the oppression of foreign powers, and free to chart its own destiny,” he said.
Striving for a Just and Inclusive Future
Though the Philippines enjoys the fruits of hard-won freedom, the country’s aspirations remain high. Manalo expressed the hope for a nation where every Filipino enjoys fair representation and equal access to opportunities for progress.
He envisioned a society where all citizens actively participate in nation-building. This vision reflects the ongoing mission to realize the full potential of a free and democratic Philippines.
The DFA’s Role in Upholding Sovereignty and Independence
Manalo reaffirmed the DFA’s unwavering commitment to an independent foreign policy that protects Philippine interests. He drew parallels between the courage of the Katipunan fighters and the dedication of modern Filipino diplomats.
“The same courage and resilience that fueled the Katipunan is the same one that moves our foreign service,” Manalo said. He added that the grit embedded in the Filipino spirit continues to drive diplomats to defend the country’s sovereignty.
Moreover, Manalo connected the revolutionary spirit of national hero José Rizal with the DFA’s ongoing efforts. “The same consciousness that made Rizal’s pen literary masterpieces that ignited the Philippines’ quest for independence inspires the women and men of the Department of Foreign Affairs to help propel our nation to new heights,” he remarked.
As the Philippines marks another Independence Day, the call to remember and build upon its historic contributions to upholding international law resonates deeply, inspiring a shared journey toward a brighter future.
