Philippines Insists on Right to Accept Deported Filipinos Amid US Migrant Plans

Philippines Demands Return of Deportees

In a firm stance, the Philippine government has urged U.S. officials to allow Filipinos facing deportation to return safely to the Philippines. This comes amid reports that the Trump administration plans to send a group of undocumented migrants, including Filipinos, to Libya.

Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez revealed that the Philippine Embassy has already sought detailed information from U.S. immigration authorities. They requested clarity on the plan to transfer migrants to a third country and asked about the status and number of Filipinos under U.S. custody with deportation orders.

“We have informed the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary and ICE that the Philippine government will accept all Filipinos back regardless of their immigration status,” Romualdez emphasized. He also assured that Manila is ready to collaborate with U.S. agencies to address this delicate matter.

Legal Moves and Political Reactions

Recently, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order to stop the transfer of migrants to Libya or any other third country. Senate President Francis Escudero condemned the plan, calling the idea of “exporting” migrants to Libya cruel and inhumane.

Meanwhile, Libya’s provisional Government of National Unity publicly rejected the proposal to use their country as a deportation destination without prior consent.

Support for Filipinos in the U.S.

With President Donald Trump intensifying immigration enforcement, the embassy remains dedicated to assisting Filipinos facing immigration challenges. Still, Romualdez reminded the community that help will be provided only within legal limits.

He also urged Filipinos who entered the U.S. illegally or overstayed their visas to consider voluntary departure if no lawful options exist. Furthermore, affected individuals are encouraged to seek legal counsel and connect with organizations genuinely committed to their welfare.

“The best advice remains for undocumented Filipinos to pursue legal pathways for their peace of mind,” Romualdez concluded.
