Philippines Champions Health Equity Globally
The Philippines, through its Department of Health (DOH), has taken a firm stand to promote health equity on local, regional, and international stages. As the President of the 78th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA), the country is leading initiatives to ensure fair access to essential health services for all.
Serving as the leading nation for this year’s WHA, the DOH is collaborating closely with member states and stakeholders to advance equitable healthcare. This commitment highlights the Philippines’ pivotal role in shaping global health discussions and policies.
Guided by National Leadership
“President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s direction is to address long-term health objectives, promote a more equitable and resilient global health landscape, and enable dialogue on critical health issues globally, having Philippines in the forefront,” the DOH emphasized. This vision sets the tone for the country’s proactive engagement in international health diplomacy.
The Philippines’ presidency marks its first time leading the WHA since the assembly began in 1948, underscoring a significant milestone in its health leadership journey.
Expanding Global Health Diplomacy
Under the leadership of Health Secretary Dr. Ted Herbosa, the DOH is broadening its influence through global health diplomacy efforts. This includes strengthening bilateral partnerships and participating in various health cooperation programs worldwide.
The WHA stands as the World Health Organization’s (WHO) supreme decision-making body, with representatives from all 194 WHO member states. Within the Western Pacific region alone, 37 countries and territories are involved, reflecting a wide collaborative network.
Regional Role and Strategic Partnerships
The Philippines hosts the WHO regional office for the Western Pacific and is one of the founding members of the WHO. This gives the country a unique platform to influence regional health policies and initiatives.
Prior to the assembly taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 19 to 27, 2025, Health Secretary Herbosa met with WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. These consultations aim to align the Philippines’ leadership role with the global health agenda.
