Philippines Satisfied with Ongoing Tariff Negotiations with US
The Philippines expressed satisfaction with the ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States despite the 17 percent reciprocal tariff imposed by the US administration. Local officials confirmed that trade talks continue steadily amid the challenges posed by these new duties.
When asked about the progress of the discussions, a government spokesperson responded, “Yes, opo,” affirming the country’s contentment with how talks are moving forward. However, she refrained from sharing detailed information due to confidentiality agreements.
“Meron pong deadline, pero again hindi ko po masasabi yung ibang detalye because of confidentiality agreement pero tuloy tuloy po yung pakikipag-ugnayan po nila sa US representatives,” the spokesperson said during a press briefing. This translates to a confirmation that while there is a set deadline, ongoing coordination with US trade representatives remains active.
Confidential Trade Talks Continue Amid Tariff Tensions
Government sources noted that the Department of Trade and Industry and the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs maintain constant communication with the US Trade Representative. Yet, details remain under wraps because of nondisclosure agreements.
The Trump administration imposed a 17-percent reciprocal tariff on the Philippines as part of a broader strategy to apply new taxes on all trading partners. Initially scheduled for implementation on April 9, the tariffs were postponed for 90 days, now set to take effect by July 7.
Despite these hurdles, the Philippines remains engaged in negotiations, aiming to manage the impact of the tariffs while seeking favorable trade conditions. Officials remain committed to ongoing dialogue, signaling optimism about resolving issues through diplomatic channels.
