Philippines and US Renew Defense Cooperation Amid Rising Threats
The Philippines and the United States have reaffirmed their strong alliance, committing to deepen defense cooperation in response to an “imminent threat” from China. This renewed partnership was highlighted during a bilateral meeting between the Department of National Defense Secretary and his US counterpart on the sidelines of a major defense summit in Singapore.
Officials emphasized the importance of a united front to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. “We just came off the heels of a very successful U.S.-ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting, where Secretary Hegseth made a great impact—I could feel it among our counterparts here,” said the Philippine defense chief. He added, “It is proof of the Trump administration’s strong commitment to engage the ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific. We will continue to enhance both our bilateral and multilateral relationships, guided by our shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
The Philippines is dedicated to securing lasting peace, particularly as China continues to assert its claims aggressively in the South China Sea. “The Philippines does seek peace, but in this instance, it is important to have a sustainable peace that is based on our own resilience and alliances with like-minded partners,” the defense secretary explained.
China’s Maritime Claims and Recent Tensions
China claims nearly the entire South China Sea, including areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. Recent incidents have raised tensions, such as a China Coast Guard vessel reportedly sideswiping and using a water cannon against a civilian fishing boat near a disputed island in the West Philippine Sea.
In response, the US defense official praised the Philippines’ clear stance on the South China Sea issues. He highlighted the recent Balikatan Exercises, a joint military training involving thousands of American and Filipino troops that covered land, sea, air, cyber, and humanitarian operations. “I want to applaud the Philippines for their courage and clarity in the South China Sea, and their clear-eyed recognition of the challenges we face. We stand shoulder to shoulder in our pursuit of peace and stability in the region,” he said.
Balikatan Exercises Showcase Strengthened Alliance
The Balikatan Exercises took place from late April to early May, simulating a full-scale battle scenario that tested the capability and coordination of both countries’ armed forces. The exercises demonstrated the effective interoperability between the two militaries, a key factor in deterring potential conflicts.
The US defense leader warned that the threat from China is “real” and “imminent,” urging stronger partnerships among nations in the region. Despite China’s decision not to participate in the defense summit, the US official affirmed commitment to engagement and peace. “We don’t seek conflict with anybody. And that’s important to emphasize. We’re here to engage military to military, country to country,” he said.
Expanding Regional Defense Partnerships
Aside from the US, the Philippines is also enhancing its strategic defense ties with Singapore and Australia. Meetings with defense ministers from these countries focused on improving training interoperability, joint exercises, and logistical support.
The Philippine defense chief highlighted the country’s vast training areas, ideal for urban and airborne exercises, and expressed interest in learning from Singapore’s experience with specific aircraft operations. Singapore welcomed these ideas and invited Philippine special forces for training, while also proposing reciprocal training opportunities for their troops in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, discussions with Australia centered on strengthening trilateral cooperation involving the Philippines, Australia, and the United States. The Philippine official offered to host the next defense ministers’ meeting alongside a joint exercise, reflecting growing momentum in regional defense collaboration. The Australian defense minister praised the evolving partnership and emphasized turning longstanding people-to-people connections into a robust strategic alliance.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Defense Through Partnerships
Earlier this year, the Philippines and the US agreed to deploy advanced military capabilities, improve joint troop interoperability, and prioritize defense industrial cooperation. Plans also include conducting joint cyber campaigns to counter emerging threats.
These efforts underline a shared commitment to a free, open, and stable Indo-Pacific region through strong alliances and collective resilience.
