Philippines Commits to More Filipino Peacekeepers
The Philippines is set to increase the deployment of Filipino peacekeepers to United Nations missions, aiming to contribute to a safer and more secure world. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. announced this commitment during the recent UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Berlin.
Gathering over 150 high-ranking delegates, the meeting focused on the future of UN peacekeeping and enhancing mission capabilities. Representing the Philippines, Teodoro revealed new pledges that underscore Manila’s dedication to international peace efforts.
New Pledges for Filipino Peacekeepers
“We are honored to announce our new pledges: the deployment of one Light Infantry Battalion [from the Armed Forces of the Philippines] and one Formed Police Unit under the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System,” Teodoro stated. He emphasized that the Philippines will also maintain its deployment of Military Observers and Individual Police Officers to support UN mission staff worldwide.
These new commitments add to the country’s existing contributions, which include a Quick Reaction Force Company and a Military Construction Engineering Company.
Capacity Building and Training Initiatives
In addition to troop deployment, the Philippines plans to host the UN Triangular Partnership Programme (TPP) Training Courses within the ASEAN region from 2029 to 2030. This initiative aims to strengthen peacekeeper preparedness across the region.
Manila also pledged to offer UN-certified Military Mobile Training Teams to help address both emerging and ongoing peacekeeping challenges effectively.
ASEAN Peacekeeping Staff Exercise 2025
Further supporting regional cooperation, the Philippines will host the 2025 ASEAN Peacekeeping Staff Exercise in September. This event will equip ASEAN troops with the skills needed for safer and more effective UN peacekeeping operations.
Ongoing Commitment to Global Peace
Teodoro reaffirmed the country’s role as a trusted partner and peacemaker in the quest for lasting peace, saying, “The Philippines stands ready to contribute to a safer and more secure world as a trusted partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker in the pursuit of lasting and sustainable peace.”
As of February 2025, the Philippines contributes 33 personnel to UN missions, including 23 police officers, nine experts, and one staff officer, reflecting its ongoing commitment to peacekeeping efforts worldwide.
