PMA Class of 2029 Embraces New Curriculum

PMA Class of 2029 Launches Military Journey

The Philippine Military Academy officially welcomed the PMA Class of 2029, marking a new chapter in the academy’s history. This batch of 340 fresh recruits, composed of 274 males and 66 females, is the first to experience the academy’s enhanced curriculum. These changes emphasize territorial defense and the complexities of modern warfare, preparing cadets for the evolving challenges ahead.

“From here on, you are no longer ordinary citizens. The next step you make, you do so as PMA cadets. On your shoulders lie the trust and expectations of your families, communities, and most importantly, the Filipino people at large. You now belong to an institution built on honor, courage, and an unshakable commitment to the Filipino people,” PMA Superintendent Vice Admiral Caesar Bernard Valencia declared during the reception rites held at Fort Del Pilar in Baguio City on June 1.

Rigorous Selection and Training Ahead

The PMA Class of 2029 was chosen through a highly competitive process. Out of 37,295 hopefuls, only 21,796 qualified to take the entrance exam. From these, 1,701 passed, and after rigorous physical and medical screenings, the final 340 cadets were selected. This careful vetting ensures that only the most capable candidates join the academy.

Valencia highlighted the intense demands of today’s global environment. “You, the PMA class of 2029, are entering the academy in a rapidly changing world. The level and type of competency as well as fortitude that will be inculcated in you are fine-tuned to the threats we are facing in the 21st century,” he said.

He further explained that future military leaders must be ready to face cyberattacks, cognitive and asymmetric warfare, climate disasters, and various human insecurities.

Innovative Curriculum for Future Leaders

Upon entry, these cadets will hold the rank of fourth class cadets in the Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP). They will first undergo three months of basic military training before starting their academic courses.

This class is the pioneer of the updated Bachelor of Science in Management major in Security Studies. The new curriculum, recently approved by the Department of National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., merges general education with specialized subjects. Cadets will now study cyber warfare, electronic warfare, artificial intelligence, and drone warfare, reflecting the modern battlefield’s demands.

A notable change is the integrated training of cadets across branches. Unlike before, those aiming for the Philippine Army will train alongside future Philippine Air Force and Philippine Navy officers, fostering unity and cross-branch understanding.

Equal Opportunity and Leadership

Major General Ramon P. Flores, the commandant of cadets, emphasized the academy’s role as a great equalizer. “PMA is an institution that we call a great equalizer. A son of a simple or a great man must prove their worth in entering the PMA. We will be asking for prayers that their leadership journey here in PMA will be guided by the Almighty,” he said.

This fresh group of cadets stands ready to embark on their leadership journey, equipped with the knowledge and skills tailored for the modern security landscape.
