Rising Star of the Philippine Army from PMA Siklab-Laya Class of 2025
Second Lieutenant Jessie Ticar Jr., the valedictorian of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Siklab-Laya Class of 2025, is ready to take on a leadership role as a platoon leader in the Philippine Army. His journey reflects his deep commitment to serving the country, and his aspirations are clear: to one day become the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
During a recent visit to the AFP General Headquarters at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, Ticar shared his career goals with media representatives. “I plan to serve and focus on being a junior officer in the Philippine Army as a platoon leader, leading his men on the field,” he said in Filipino. He also expressed his desire to develop himself continuously so he can serve for as long as possible, ultimately aiming for the highest position in the military.
Inspiration and Early Leadership Formation
Ticar’s motivation to lead and serve was strengthened during his time at the academy, particularly through the Scout Ranger Orientation Course in Bulacan. He recalled, “In the academy, we conducted a Scout Ranger Orientation Course in Bulacan. In our orientation course, I further developed my desire to serve the Philippine Army and to lead people. I loved the idea of leading my troops on the field.” This experience solidified his passion for military leadership.
At only 23 years old, the Quezon City native graduated summa cum laude from the PMA, becoming just the fourth cadet in the academy’s 127-year history to achieve this honor. He also earned the highest grade point average among his peers.
Family Background and Personal Sacrifices
Despite his academic and military success, Ticar comes from humble beginnings. His mother, Anita, supports the family by selling ballpens and envelopes near the Quezon City Hall. Meanwhile, his father Jesse suffered a stroke, becoming a person with disability and losing his job as a taxi driver.
“Before, I could only communicate with my parents through chats and messages. But I was able to talk to them during my graduation since they came to support me. Finally, I got to be with them after a long time of my stay in the academy,” Ticar shared.
Now that he is officially part of the Army, Ticar hopes to improve his family’s quality of life as a way to repay the sacrifices his parents made to support his education and career.
Aiming for the Highest Ranks
During his graduation ceremony on May 17 at Fort del Pilar in Baguio City, Ticar had the opportunity to meet AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr., a moment that further fueled his ambition. With determination and dedication, he plans to build a long and meaningful career, leading soldiers on the front lines and eventually reaching the top leadership position in the Armed Forces.
