Manila, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified security operations nationwide ahead of Eleksyon 2025, following a string of violence that has heightened public concern over election-related safety.
The PNP’s heightened alert comes in the wake of the fatal shooting of Rizal, Cagayan Mayor Joel Ruma during a campaign rally on Wednesday. The incident has cast a shadow over the early stages of the electoral season and prompted a firm response from law enforcement.
In a statement, PNP Chief Police General Rommel Marbil underscored the police force’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, order, and the integrity of the democratic process.
“We will not tolerate fear and violence influencing the outcome of our democratic process,” Marbil said. “We are fully committed to safeguarding every Filipino’s right to vote freely and safely.”
In addition to the Cagayan incident, the PNP is also responding to threats received by a media practitioner in Abra who posted critical commentary online. The case has raised alarm within press circles and drawn swift action from authorities.
To address these incidents, the PNP has activated a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to probe Mayor Ruma’s killing, while also coordinating with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) to investigate the threats against the journalist.
The PNP also reaffirmed its backing of the Media Vanguards Initiative, which provides protection to media workers facing harassment or intimidation. This initiative is seen as part of the broader effort to uphold press freedom and ensure accountability.
As the 2025 national elections draw closer, the PNP is calling on all sectors to remain vigilant, exercise civic responsibility, and contribute to a peaceful, honest, and orderly election.
