Senator-Elect Endorses New PNP Chief
Senator-elect Panfilo “Ping” Lacson expressed strong support on Friday, May 30, for the appointment of P/Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III as the new chief of the Philippine National Police. According to sources close to the matter, Lacson, who also previously served as PNP chief, described Torre as a “decisive,” “firm,” and “mission-oriented” leader.
“From what I have heard and observed about him, he’s a decisive, firm and mission-oriented official, so he deserves to be appointed as chief of the PNP,” Lacson said in Filipino during a televised interview. This endorsement highlights the confidence in Torre’s leadership capabilities as he prepares to take on his new role.
Background of the New PNP Chief
Nicolas Torre has an extensive background in law enforcement, having led the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG). He is recognized for managing several high-profile cases during the current administration. Notably, Torre oversaw the arrest of Apollo Quiboloy, accused of sexual offenses, and more recently, the apprehension of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
His experience in handling sensitive and significant cases has earned him respect among community leaders and law enforcement circles. Torre is set to formally assume his position on June 2, succeeding P/Gen. Rommel Marbil, who is scheduled to retire on June 7.
Calls for Cabinet Reorganization Amid Allegations
In addition to supporting the new PNP leadership, Senator-elect Lacson renewed his appeal for the current administration to expedite the reorganization of the Cabinet. He noted that various sectors have circulated names alongside so-called “white papers,” which contain derogatory information targeting certain Cabinet members.
One such white paper reportedly targets Department of National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. Despite this, President Marcos has rejected Teodoro’s courtesy resignation. Reflecting on this decision, Lacson remarked, “It is good that Teodoro’s courtesy resignation was acted upon because he was one of the targets of the white paper.”
This development underlines ongoing political dynamics and the need for stable leadership in key government positions.
