PNP Chief Considers Replacing Officials in Bicol Region
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III is contemplating opening three positions in the Police Regional Office Bicol Region due to underperformance. During a recent visit, he expressed concerns about the leadership and supervision within the regional police force.
Torre visited Bicol over the weekend to inaugurate the new Sorsogon City Police Station Building and Multi-Purpose Building. He used the opportunity to assess the regional police’s current standing and performance.
Performance Assessment Sparks Possible Changes
“We are assessing whether or not I’ll open three positions there. We are assessing their performances because we warned them yesterday to practice some more,” Torre said at a press conference held at Camp Crame on Monday.
He noted, “It’s very evident that we have another provincial director that isn’t really supervising their personnel,” pointing out the leadership gaps affecting police operations.
Earlier in June, Torre relieved eight Metro Manila police chiefs along with two provincial directors for failing to meet his strict five-minute response time goal. This move emphasizes his commitment to improving police responsiveness nationwide.
Command Skills Under Scrutiny
“We can clearly see that even our commanders on the ground have forgotten already how to make and deliver the commands,” Torre added, highlighting the need for stronger command skills among police leaders.
He stressed, “The only way to be effective at that is you should be skilled at commanding,” underscoring the importance of leadership in police effectiveness.
Support from Local Government
During his visit, Sorsogon Governor Hon. Jose Edwin B. Hamor handed over 37 new patrol cars to the local police force, aiming to boost their capability in serving and protecting the community, sources said.
These developments illustrate ongoing efforts to enhance police performance and public safety in the Bicol Region.
