PNP Chief Acts on Lazy Theft Case Handling
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III has relieved the police chief of a city in Rizal due to what he called the lazy handling of theft case by personnel. The decision highlights the PNP’s zero tolerance for negligence in law enforcement.
During the flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame on Monday, Torre announced the dismissal, emphasizing the need for accountability in police operations.
Details of the Incident and Police Response
“Over the weekend, I relieved one chief of police in a city in Rizal because of the lazy handling by their personnel,” Torre said. Antipolo is the only city in Rizal, strongly suggesting where the action took place.
The Chief shared that a businessman reported two employees who disappeared with stolen money. However, the city police reportedly sent the businessman home, merely stating that the case was being prepared for court filing.
“That night, someone who knew me saw that. They texted me that report. I called the PD. ‘PD, this appears to be lazy on the part of our personnel. Are we settling for this? The police’s work is done just because we’ve already sent it for filing of cases,” Torre recounted.
Recovery of Stolen Money and Arrests
Following Torre’s intervention, police in a province within the Negros Island Region arrested the two suspects and recovered P500,000 of the stolen funds. However, details about the police chief, businessman, suspects, or exact dates were not disclosed.
PNP Chief’s Message to the Public
“To our citizens, perhaps, you know of incidents like this where you are given lazy service by our police officers. Bring this to our attention and we will relieve the commander,” Torre said. He stressed that commanders who show negligence will not regain their posts while he leads the PNP.
“They are never to be given again another commander’s position while I am chief PNP, unless we’ve exhausted everyone who is qualified to take their place,” he added firmly.
This move follows previous actions where eight NCR police chiefs were relieved for failing to meet response time standards.
