PNP Chief Begins Training for Boxing Match
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III has started training for a proposed boxing match against acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte. The highly anticipated event aims to raise funds for those affected by the recent southwest monsoon, locally called habagat.
The four-word keyphrase “PNP Chief Nicolas Torre” appears early as Torre gears up for the charity fight. Training began Thursday at Camp Crame, Quezon City, while preparations for the venue at Rizal Memorial Coliseum are underway for the upcoming Sunday event.
Interior Secretary Criticizes Duterte’s Conduct
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla expressed concern over acting Mayor Duterte’s behavior after the latter challenged PNP Chief Nicolas Torre to a fistfight during a recent podcast. Remulla urged the mayor to “conduct himself better,” emphasizing the importance of setting a good example.
Remulla stressed, “His freedom of speech, all of it, that’s allowed. But I think he should conduct himself in a better manner.” He reminded the public that disputes should be settled through proper legal channels, not physical confrontations.
Dispute Stemming from Former President’s Arrest
The challenge came after Duterte voiced grievances over the arrest and transfer of his father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, last March. The younger Duterte claimed that PNP Chief Nicolas Torre was only powerful because of his position and boldly said he could take him on in a fight.
Remulla responded, “That’s the culture we want to replace. Justice or settlements of disputes shouldn’t be done fist-to-fist. The president is promoting that the rule of law must prevail at all times. If you have a grievance, take it to court or file a complaint.”
He also questioned the mayor’s example to the youth, adding, “You’re the mayor of the largest city in Mindanao. You are the son of a former president. Many people look up to you and you challenge someone to a fistfight. What will the children say?”
Support from the Department of Interior and Local Government
Despite the controversy, Remulla voiced his full support for the PNP chief, describing him as a “bulldog” and “pitbull” who never backs down. The charity boxing match offers an opportunity to channel the tension into a positive cause.
Gen. Torre’s acceptance of the challenge and his commitment to preparing for the fight highlight his resolve. The event is expected to draw significant public attention, serving both as entertainment and a fundraiser.
