PNP Chief to Review Boracay and Aklan Cases
ILOILO CITY – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas D. Torre III announced plans to review two high-profile cases in Aklan province: the rape-slay of a Slovakian tourist on Boracay Island and the murder of veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang. These unresolved incidents have drawn significant public attention.
“I will review it. I will ask for updates of the cases,” Torre told media sources while visiting Iloilo City over the weekend. The four-word keyphrase “Boracay rape-slay and journalist murder” sums up the critical cases under scrutiny.
Contradictory Statements Spark Criticism
The Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO), led by Police Col. Arnel Ramos, has faced criticism for inconsistent and confusing public statements regarding the deaths. Ramos heads the Special Investigation Task Groups (SITGs) handling the rape-slay of 23-year-old Michaela Mickova in Boracay last March and the assassination of 89-year-old Dayang in Kalibo last April.
Although authorities have filed a rape with homicide case against suspects in Mickova’s killing, APPO has withheld details such as the number of suspects and arrests. Meanwhile, Police Regional Office-6 chief, Police Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, has provided more detailed information to the press.
Calls for Transparency and Accountability
The APPO also declared Dayang’s murder case “cleared” based on PNP terminology, citing the identification of a suspect and the filing of charges in court. However, no arrests have been made, prompting outrage from the journalist’s family. “Justice doesn’t stop at paperwork. It moves when people are held accountable,” they stressed.
Local media and residents understand the need for discretion but urge police to issue clear and truthful updates to avoid public confusion. The contradictions have undermined trust and fueled demand for transparency.
PNP Prioritizes Justice in Unsolved Cases
Gen. Torre assured the public that the PNP remains committed to solving these high-profile cases. He pledged ongoing oversight and emphasized that justice will be pursued thoroughly.
The Boracay rape-slay and journalist murder continue to weigh heavily on the community, highlighting the urgent need for clear communication and effective law enforcement.
