PNP Distributes Over P16M Proceeds From Charity Boxing Match
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has begun distributing the over P16 million proceeds from the charity boxing match between PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III and acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte. The funds will aid communities affected by the southwest monsoon and recent tropical cyclones.
Gen. Torre shared that they have already allocated P5 million to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and P3 million to the PRC’s Quezon City chapter. Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) requested five tons of rice instead of a cash donation.
“So that would be 1,000 sacks of rice I think, this is for the fast accounting process. We sought the permission of the donors that we would use the money to buy rice for the DSWD and they agreed,” the PNP chief explained during a press conference on Monday.
He also added, “We will give the rest to relief operations in other areas. We already distributed some of it after the match in Tondo, we gave 1,000 sacks to the families.”
Relief Efforts Benefit Millions Affected by Weather Disturbances
The proceeds from the charity boxing match will support victims of the habagat (southwest monsoon) and recent tropical cyclones. According to the latest DSWD data, these weather events have impacted over 9.2 million individuals and more than 2.5 million families nationwide.
On July 27, Gen. Torre was declared the winner after Mayor Duterte chose not to participate in the match. When asked if he was open to another bout, Torre replied, “I think so, I have a lot of work and this is not worth responding to.” He further remarked, “As you can see, we exerted a lot of effort in this event. I don’t think he is worth responding to at this point. We should just let him in his own world.”
Official Responses and Charity Focus
In response, Duterte shared a photo of his approved travel authority for a trip to Singapore dated July 20, captioning it, “Chimps from the planet of the apes cannot comprehend, congrats Diwata Torre!”. Meanwhile, Torre thanked him during the same press conference.
Despite Duterte’s earlier announcement that he would not attend the charity event, Torre explained that the match went ahead because urgent aid was needed for those affected by the recent weather calamities. “Well, as policemen, we are also frontliners and we see the ordeal that affected citizens face, that’s why when the mayor issued that statement, we saw it as an opportunity to raise funds outside the government resources,” he said.
These efforts highlight the commitment to support disaster-affected communities beyond traditional government assistance. For more news and updates on charity boxing match proceeds, visit Filipinokami.com.
