PNP Ends Partnership with Fitness Vlogger on Weight Loss Drive
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has officially ended its partnership with fitness vlogger Rendon Labador amid confusion surrounding a weight loss drive led by one of its units. This marks a significant shift in the ongoing fitness campaign aimed at improving the health of police personnel.
The Police Community Affairs and Development Group (PCADG) initially invited Labador to lead a 93-day weight loss program. However, a PNP memorandum issued on June 21 clarified that the vlogger was not assigned to lead a police force-wide fitness initiative. This misunderstanding prompted the termination of their engagement.
Clarifying the Weight Loss Drive Confusion
“I understand na parang naputol na yung engagement ng PCADG sa kanya. That is what General Marvin Saro mentioned to me when I called him the other day,” PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo shared during a briefing.
She added, “According to General Saro, there was a misunderstanding in terms of the engagement with the concerned individual. Probably, na-excite lang siguro si Rendon nung magkausap sila, and the topic was brought up.” The vlogger’s enthusiasm may have led to miscommunication about his role.
Despite the mix-up, the PNP remains open to Labador’s insights regarding their weight loss initiatives. The program officially launched last Friday, aiming to encourage healthier lifestyles among police officers.
Background of the Fitness Initiative
Before the program’s start, Labador revealed in an interview that he was approached by General Saro to lead the initiative and agreed to do so without compensation. The fitness drive was prompted by PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III’s directive that officers failing the physical fitness test twice must undergo retraining and could face promotion restrictions.
Gen. Torre reiterated the importance of adhering to Republic Act 6975, which reorganizes the PNP under the Department of the Interior and Local Government. The law mandates physical fitness standards for police personnel.
Legal Fitness Standards for PNP Officers
Section 30, Paragraph I of Republic Act 6975 states that a police officer “must [weigh] not more or less than five kilograms of the standard weight corresponding to his or her height, age and sex” to qualify for appointment or promotion within the PNP.
This legal requirement underscores the agency’s commitment to maintaining a physically fit police force. The recent fitness drive and weight loss program are part of this broader enforcement of health and fitness standards.
