PNP Expects Preliminary Report on Sabungeros Case Soon

PNP Awaits Preliminary Report on Sabungeros Case

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is anticipating the preliminary report on the investigation into police officers allegedly involved in the disappearance of sabungeros, or cockfighting enthusiasts. Officials expect the findings before the week ends, bringing the case closer to resolution.

PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed that 15 police officers linked to the case are currently under restrictive custody at Camp Crame. This development marks a significant step forward in the probe concerning the sabungeros.

“We expect that before this week ends, the (administrative) case against them would be possible, after the report is done,” PNP Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo shared during a press briefing at Camp Crame on Tuesday. She added that the report will clarify which officers will face administrative charges related to the sabungeros case.

Investigation and Custody Details

The National Police Commission (Napolcom) launched an investigation in late June after whistleblower Julie Patidongan, also known as Totoy, accused businessman Atong Ang of paying police officers to abduct and kill sabungeros. Napolcom has vowed to impose administrative sanctions, including dismissal, on any personnel found guilty.

Among the 15 officers in restrictive custody, 11 are on active duty, one is retired, and three were already dismissed before being implicated. Restrictive custody means these officers are confined within Camp Crame but may visit their homes only under police escort, according to Fajardo.

Regarding criminal charges, the PNP defers to the Department of Justice (DOJ) but stands ready to assist if called upon. Fajardo assured the public that the investigation is making good progress, although she did not disclose specific details.

Expanding the Search for Sabungeros

Patidongan claimed the sabungeros were killed, tied to sandbags, and dumped in Taal Lake in Batangas. However, police are also examining other possible locations based on additional witness information.

“Some security protocols are being implemented not only with respect to the personal security of Alias Totoy but also at the possible places that may have been used to hide the possible remains of the missing sabungeros,” Fajardo said, declining to name these sites to prevent evidence tampering.

The DOJ indicated that searches in Taal Lake may commence within the week, potentially involving the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard’s technical divers to aid the operation.

Seeking Additional Witnesses to Aid Investigation

The PNP has already obtained a sworn statement from Patidongan. Still, authorities urge other witnesses to come forward to corroborate the allegations and help establish accountability.

“That is now the direction of the investigating unit, to look for other witnesses who could help us pinpoint accountability and place the criminal liability on the right people,” Fajardo emphasized.

Despite the heavy toll on families awaiting answers, relatives of the missing sabungeros remain hopeful that ongoing efforts will uncover the truth and bring justice.
