PNP-HPG Issues Warning on Fake Application Ride-Hailing Scam
The Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) recently alerted vehicle owners about a deceptive money-making scheme involving fake application and activation to ride-hailing companies. This warning follows the arrest of a suspected scammer during a police operation in Taguig City.
HPG director Brig. Gen. Eleazar Matta emphasized that those wishing to earn income through their private vehicles should directly contact the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) or legitimate Transportation Network Companies. “We should be very careful and vigilant against any modus, especially if it involves your hard-earned money,” Matta stressed.
How the Scam Worked
HPG spokesperson Nadame Malang shared that the crackdown stemmed from a complaint by a vehicle owner who lost thousands of pesos due to fraudulent activation of the Transportation Network Vehicle System (TNVS). The victim revealed paying an initial P15,000 for activation and franchise fees. However, after one or two weeks, the suspect demanded an additional P35,000 to reactivate the TNVS account.
This unexpected demand prompted the victim to seek help from the HPG. Consequently, an entrapment was carried out on June 9 in Barangay Cembo, Taguig City, leading to the suspect’s arrest. Authorities confiscated marked money and a cellphone from the individual.
Ongoing Investigation and Cooperation
Malang added that the police are coordinating with the involved ride-hailing company to deepen the investigation. The suspect reportedly mentioned contacts within the company to gain trust. Investigators are also probing how the suspect accessed the ride-hailing app’s activation system.
Authorities urge the public to remain cautious and only process applications through official channels to avoid falling victim to such scams.
