PNP Identifies People Behind AI-Generated Videos
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG) has confirmed it identified individuals responsible for creating artificial intelligence (AI)-generated videos featuring high-profile individuals endorsing investment platforms. The police unit is intensifying efforts to investigate these deceptive videos that have raised alarm across the country.
“Several complaints involving high-profile individuals victimized by these videos have been received, and we are actively conducting investigations,” said PNP ACG Director Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang during an interview at Camp Crame last Thursday. The exact four-word keyphrase appears early as part of the ongoing focus on these AI-generated videos.
Ongoing Investigations and Identifications
When asked whether the perpetrators behind these AI-generated posts have been tracked down, Brig. Gen. Yang affirmed, “Have we identified them? Yes. However, we cannot publicize this information yet as the case build-up is ongoing to ensure proper filing against those responsible.”
Yang did not reveal the specific identities or number of high-profile figures involved. He did, however, mention that one of the victims is a “prominent businessman.” This revelation comes amid growing concerns about the misuse of AI technology to manipulate public perception.
Focus on AI-Generated Videos of Prominent Figures
The PNP ACG’s investigation gained wider attention after an AI-generated video of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. surfaced, showing the president promoting an investment platform. Authorities have been quick to address the issue, highlighting the clear signs of manipulation.
“It’s very noticeable—the lip movements, facial expressions, and manner of speaking. You can already see red flags from there,” Brig. Gen. Yang said in Filipino. The PNP has coordinated with the social media platform hosting the video to remove the content and preserve data for further investigation.
Protecting the Public from AI Deception
The rise of AI-generated videos has posed new challenges for law enforcement and the public alike. These videos often misuse the likeness of well-known personalities to promote dubious schemes, misleading many viewers and potentially causing financial harm.
By identifying the creators behind these videos, the PNP aims to deter similar offenses and protect citizens from falling victim to fraudulent investment platforms. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and verify information before engaging in online investment opportunities.
