PNP Remains Apolitical Despite Viral Duterte Video
The National Police Commission (Napolcom) reaffirmed on Saturday that the Philippine National Police (PNP) stays apolitical, even after two police officers appeared in a viral video with Davao Representative Pulong Duterte. This stance highlights the PNP’s commitment to remaining separate from political affairs.
Napolcom Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Atty. Rafael Vicente Calinisan emphasized, “We’re not singling out anyone. We remind all personnel: the PNP and Napolcom should stay apolitical. Police officers are not politicians, so they must focus on law enforcement.” He added that Napolcom will continue supervising the PNP to uphold this standard.
Discharging the Cops Seen with Duterte
The statement came shortly after the PNP announced the discharge of the two cops who were ‘moonlighting’ as security guards for Duterte. PNP Police General Rommel Marbil also revealed plans to file dishonesty charges against the officers, which could bar them from holding any government position permanently.
Calinisan expressed confidence in the disciplinary process, saying, “Not all police abuse cases require Napolcom’s intervention. I trust the system. When a disciplinary authority commits to action, Napolcom respects and supports their decision without interfering.”
Trusting the System and Moving Forward
The Napolcom official hopes the PNP will expedite their investigation and is awaiting their final decision. “We expect the PNP to act promptly, and we look forward to their report here at Napolcom,” he said.
This situation underscores the importance of the PNP remaining apolitical despite public scrutiny, especially when officers are linked to political figures. The commission’s firm position aims to maintain public trust in law enforcement.
Through these actions, the PNP and Napolcom reinforce their commitment to uphold the rule of law and avoid any political entanglements that could compromise their duties.
