Police Accountability After Warrantless House Search in Taguig

Early this year, a viral video showed a warrantless police search inside a Taguig City residence. The incident sparked outrage, leading to swift action by authorities. The police accountability after warrantless house search became a focal point for enforcing discipline within the force.

On June 9, local officials announced the dismissal of eight out of ten policemen involved in the controversial operation. Additionally, a substation commander faced a rank demotion. These decisions followed a thorough four-month investigation that allowed the accused officers to present their defense, ensuring due process was observed.

NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin emphasized the department’s firm stance on police accountability. “The NCRPO will stand firm and uncompromising on ensuring police accountability within the ranks. Let it be known: there will be no second chances for police scalawags,” he said. This policy aligns with the strategic direction set by the national police chief, underscoring a zero-tolerance approach toward misconduct.

Details of the Incident and Investigation

The police accountability after warrantless house search was triggered by a video that surfaced on February 10. It showed personnel from Taguig’s Substation 5 conducting a raid without a valid warrant on February 9. The complainants accused the officers of forced entry, physical abuse, and theft of over ₱76,000 in cash and several electronic devices.

Moreover, the victims claimed they were coerced into signing documents to drop charges against the police. This alarming behavior prompted immediate relief of all officers involved.

Following a comprehensive probe, the investigation found credible evidence to dismiss eight policemen for grave misconduct, less grave misconduct, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer. One officer was cleared of all charges. These findings reinforce the message that any breach of duty will face serious consequences.

Lessons and Reminders for Police Personnel

Aberin urged all police personnel to return to basics by strictly following proper procedures and protocols. “My five key reminders emphasize: follow what is written in the Police Operational Procedures (POP), because this serves as our guide in all operations, do what is right at all times, and not involve in any illegal activities,” he stated.

By adhering to these principles, officers can ensure their actions remain lawful, proper, and respectful of citizens’ rights. The dismissal of the eight policemen and the demotion of the official serve as a clear warning that misconduct will not be tolerated.
