Motornapper Caught Through Facebook Sale
Authorities in Misamis Oriental successfully tracked and arrested a 25-year-old suspect involved in motornapping after a Facebook post helped identify the stolen motorcycle. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, May 27, following a report to the Tagoloan Municipal Police Station.
The motorcycle owner informed police that his vehicle was taken early that morning at 5 a.m. in Barangay Igpit, Opol. Shortly after the theft, the suspect listed the motorcycle for sale on an online buy-and-sell platform. Recognizing the vehicle, the owner alerted the police about the suspicious post.
Police Coordinate to Secure Arrest
Law enforcement officers from Tagoloan and Opol quickly coordinated a response, leading to the arrest of the suspect in Barangay Poblacion, Tagoloan, at 3:26 p.m. The victim cleverly used a different social media account to negotiate with the seller, pretending to be a buyer who arranged a meeting in Tagoloan town.
According to officials familiar with the case, “The victim used a different account to transact with the said seller, acting to be a buyer and meet somewhere in Tagoloan town of that same province.” This strategy helped police confirm the suspect’s identity and location.
Legal Proceedings and Police Commendation
The suspect is currently held by Opol Municipal Police Station pending proper documentation. He faces charges under Republic Act 10883, known as the New Anti-Carnapping Law of the Philippines. Community leaders praised the police for their swift and legal handling of the case.
A regional police director expressed his approval, stating, “I commend our operatives from Tagoloan MPS and Opol MPS for their professional handling of the case and their adherence to legal standards in the course of the arrest.” He added that this case demonstrates how criminals can be tracked through digital footprints.
Law enforcement agencies remain committed to public safety, enforcing laws, and ensuring that offenders face justice. This case highlights the growing role of social media in crime detection and resolution.
