Police Force Reviews Standard Operating Procedures After Fatal Shootout

MANILA — The Philippine National Police chief, General Nicolas Torre III, announced a thorough review of the police force’s standard operating procedures following a deadly shootout in Dinagat Islands on August 7. This incident has prompted officials to reassess the current protocols to enhance safety and effectiveness.

General Torre emphasized that the review will focus on the police force’s standard operating procedures, equipment, and training, especially in managing real-life, high-risk situations. “Pinag aaral natin ng maayos ang ating mga pulis at tini-training sila gamit ang mga equipment na meron tayo ngayon,” he stated during a press briefing, underscoring the importance of proper education and preparedness for officers on duty.

Details of the Shootout Incident

According to official reports, the fatal encounter occurred in Purok 4, Barangay Santa Cruz, San Jose town. Patrolman Ferry Jaso was identified as the police officer who lost his life, while the suspect involved was named Abner Casador. The confrontation escalated when Casador reportedly recognized Jaso as a police officer and fired a fatal shot to his head.

Authorities revealed that both the officer and the suspect died during the shootout. This tragic event has raised concerns among community leaders and law enforcement officials regarding the adequacy of current police procedures and training.

Enhancing Police Training and Equipment

In response to the incident, police leadership is now prioritizing the evaluation of the force’s training programs and equipment to better prepare officers for dangerous encounters. Local officials noted that realistic, scenario-based training is essential to improve decision-making and reduce casualties during operations.

Efforts are underway to ensure that officers are not only well-equipped but also thoroughly trained to handle unpredictable and life-threatening situations. This initiative aims to protect both police personnel and civilians, strengthening public trust in law enforcement agencies.

Moving Forward with Improved Protocols

The review of the police force’s standard operating procedures will involve consultations with experts and frontline officers to identify gaps and implement effective solutions. Community members expressed hope that these changes will prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to transparency and accountability. The goal is to foster a safer environment for both law enforcers and the communities they serve.
