Police Officer Seriously Wounded in Barangay San Antonio Incident
A police officer was seriously wounded after being stabbed by a man armed with a knife in Barangay San Antonio, Parañaque City, on Friday, May 23. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. along Creek Drive I, according to reports from sources familiar with the matter.
Staff Sgt. Carlo Sotelo Navarro, 45, who is assigned to the Parañaque City Police BF Homes Substation, sustained severe injuries to his head and chest. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Attempt to Stop Knife-Wielding Suspect Turns Violent
The police officer was trying to stop a man who was running amok in the neighborhood. The suspect, known only by the alias “Arnold,” is a resident of Creek Drive II and had been acting aggressively, alarming local residents who then contacted the authorities. Navarro, together with other officers and members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT), responded swiftly to the scene.
Upon arrival, the team attempted to calm Arnold down. However, the suspect’s hostility escalated quickly. Fearing that Arnold might harm innocent bystanders or even take someone hostage, Navarro intervened directly to subdue him.
Knife Attack and Arrest
Despite Navarro’s efforts, Arnold, armed with a kitchen knife, stabbed the officer in both the head and chest. Fellow officers promptly restrained and arrested the suspect to prevent further harm.
Suspect’s Background and Charges
Investigations revealed that Arnold has a history of drug use and previous involvement in cases related to alarms and scandals as well as illegal gambling. Following his arrest, he was detained at the Parañaque City Police custodial facility.
He faces multiple charges including direct assault, alarms and scandals, illegal possession of a bladed weapon, and frustrated murder.
Community leaders expressed concern over the violent episode and the suspect’s known background, emphasizing the challenges law enforcement faces in maintaining public safety.
