PNP Holds 15 Officers Under Restrictive Custody
MANILA, Philippines — The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has shown strong support for placing the 15 police officers allegedly involved in the disappearance of cockfighting enthusiasts, known locally as sabungeros, under restrictive custody. This move aims to ensure their availability for the ongoing investigations and to protect their safety throughout the process.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed that the officers tagged in the case are currently held at Camp Crame in Quezon City. By keeping them in restrictive custody, authorities can guarantee that these officers will have the opportunity to present their side by submitting counter affidavits or responses during the investigation.
Napolcom Emphasizes Safety and Accountability
Napolcom Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Rafael Calinisan highlighted the importance of this measure, stating, “This would ensure that they will be able to air out their side during the course of our proceedings by filing their counter affidavits or their answers. This would also ensure their own safety.”
Calinisan also expressed full support for placing whistleblower Julie Patidongan, also known as Totoy, under protective custody. Patidongan’s safety is crucial as he holds vital information about the case. “His safety is of paramount importance as he has a story to tell to the nation,” the vice chairperson stressed.
Ongoing Investigations and Protective Measures
Authorities from Napolcom, the PNP, and the Department of Justice (DOJ) continue to work tirelessly on multiple fronts to unravel the truth behind the disappearances. Calinisan emphasized, “Napolcom, the PNP and the DOJ still have a lot to do on multiple fronts.”
In a recent interview with a local news outlet, Patidongan claimed that police officers were involved in the kidnapping and killing of sabungeros between April 2021 and January 2022. This alarming accusation prompted Napolcom to launch its own investigation, vowing strict administrative sanctions, including dismissal from service, for any officers found guilty of involvement.
Commitment to Justice and Transparency
The move to place the 15 officers under restrictive custody signals a firm step towards transparency and accountability within the police force. It ensures that those implicated can respond to the allegations while maintaining order and safety in the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, protective custody for the whistleblower safeguards crucial testimony that may shed light on the case, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to justice for the victims.
