Police Officers Under Investigation in Cockfighting Abductions
MANILA, Philippines — The National Police Commission (Napolcom) is intensifying its probe as more police officers, including high-ranking officials, face investigation in relation to the abduction of cockfighting enthusiasts, known locally as sabungeros.
Napolcom Vice Chairperson Rafael Calinisan revealed in an interview at his Quezon City office that the investigation now includes “many other names who have yet to surface,” emphasizing that “there are many other names with high ranks whom we are looking into.” He confirmed that the highest rank of officers being investigated is that of a general.
High-Ranking Officials Under Scrutiny
When asked about the identities and number of officers involved, Calinisan declined to provide details, citing ongoing investigations. He warned, “There’d be hints. Allow us to investigate. Many are trying to stir the pot, and many are trying to interfere. If I say the ranks of those generals, many will try to step in.”
These developments come after Napolcom filed administrative charges on July 29 against 12 active police officers linked to the alleged kidnappings and killings of sabungeros. Philippine National Police Chief General Nicolas Torre III confirmed that these officers were placed under restrictive custody as early as July 7.
Challenges in the Investigation
General Torre also disclosed that attempts to secure testimonies from the implicated officers have faced setbacks. “Someone tried, but the person backed out,” he said when asked about witnesses coming forward.
Moreover, Calinisan previously disclosed that two unnamed groups have been attempting to influence and interfere with the ongoing investigation, complicating the commission’s efforts to uncover the truth.
As the probe continues, Napolcom remains committed to unveiling all those involved, regardless of rank, to ensure justice for the victims and uphold the integrity of law enforcement.
