Police Probe Officer Arresting Guard Who Shot Robbery Suspect in Cebu
A police officer is currently under investigation for arresting a security guard who shot a robbery suspect in Cebu province, local authorities said. The incident has raised questions about the appropriate response during such criminal encounters.
The robbery occurred last Wednesday at a farm, involving three suspects. According to police officials, one suspect managed to escape, another was apprehended, and the third was shot by the security guard on duty.
Investigation Launched on Police Officer’s Actions
PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III announced during a flag-raising ceremony that the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) and the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) are reviewing the police officer’s handling of the situation. “I’m having IAS and IMEG investigate and review the situation now, whether our police officer’s strategy was correct. Was the response right?” he stated.
He added that the circumstances are still under scrutiny, noting the likelihood that the suspects may have resisted or threatened the guard. “If not, there were three people, and the guard was threatened. Whatever his decision was, right or wrong, we’re having that investigated,” he explained.
Guard’s Valid Firearm License Confirmed
Authorities confirmed that the security guard possessed a valid license for his firearm and was authorized by his agency. This detail is crucial as it supports the legitimacy of the guard’s actions during the robbery attempt.
The police chief emphasized the importance of proper arrest procedures during inquest proceedings. “Police officers must ensure that their arrests are done properly or risk violating the rules of criminal procedure,” he said.
He also addressed public criticism, noting, “We hear them on social media. ‘The law is really dumb,’ they say. That’s not stupidity of the law, actually. That’s the questionable disposition on the side of the investigating police officer.”
Unclear Details on Suspects’ Fate
Details about the suspect who was shot and the one who escaped remain undisclosed as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released further information pending the outcome of the inquiry.
