Police Sergeant Arrested Over Inmate Escape Incident
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) apprehended a police sergeant on Tuesday, June 10, following the escape of an inmate from a detention area at a Caloocan City Police substation. This arrest highlights strict enforcement and accountability among law enforcement personnel.
NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin revealed that the operation originated after a routine accounting of Persons Under Police Custody at Caloocan City Police Substation 6 uncovered the incident. The escape occurred on the night of June 8 but was only discovered late Monday evening.
Investigation Uncovers Custodial Lapses
Further investigation showed that the police staff sergeant on duty during the inmate’s escape failed to report the event. Authorities arrested the sergeant around 10 a.m. on Tuesday along Samson Road in Barangay 8, Caloocan City, charging him with negligence.
“Immediate verification and investigation revealed lapses in custodial procedures,” said Aberin. The policeman now faces charges under Article 224 of the Revised Penal Code for Infidelity in the Custody of Prisoner or Evasion through Negligence.
Strict Measures Against Violations Within Police Ranks
Aberin emphasized that this operation aligns with the directive of the national police chief to pursue officers who violate the law. “NCRPO will be decisive in our actions against members of the police force who will violate the law. In doing so, we assure that their rights are respected and due process of law is observed. NCRPO’s actions make one thing clear: no one is above the law, especially those who are entrusted to enforce it,” he said.
This case serves as a reminder that every law enforcer is accountable for their duties, especially in safeguarding inmates. The NCRPO continues to strengthen its commitment to uphold justice and maintain public trust.
